Job Description - ​Under the direction of the superintendent, this internship is an opportunity designed for students to obtain relevant work experience to be competitive for future positions in park operations, such as: management, interpretation/education, administration, maintenance, resource management and protection, law-enforcement, etc. Responsible for performing a complete range of tasks to experience all the aspects of park administration, operations and management, and maintenance. 

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from accredited college or university at time of application
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system
  • Required to work 10 - 40 hours per week with hours other than 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Required to work outside and perform manual labor 
  • Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures 

Benefits and Opportunities

This is a paid internship where you will make approximately $12 per hour. Room and board are not provided, but there are many housing opportunities close by. This internship will allow you to build many positive relationships within the TPWD agency, which is great networking for the future. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of individuals, assist with several different grounds and facility maintenance projects within the park, and gain an immense amount of experience in customer service. This is an internship where you wake up every day and you're happy you get to go to work because of the caliber of people you work with, the place you get to work in, and the experience you will gain through your work.                        
Achievements
Through my work assisting with grounds maintenance on the park, I have significantly increased my knowledge of using and maintaining lawnmowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, and power washers. I also had the opportunity to work with heavy machinery, a tractor and skid steer, on several occasions. I've learned a lot about working with chainsaws and the techniques you must use to safely and efficiently cut down trees. I had the opportunity to work out in the field and in the office, so I gained an immense amount of knowledge about working with different people and how to effectively communicate with others. 

While working at the park, I have been able to assist with a few different projects that were really great learning experiences. I have assisted with cutting down over 100 trees throughout the park, clearing and limbing a four mile equestrian trail, a repair of a waste water lift station, the organization of the parks maintenance shop and yard, painting and power washing facilities throughout the park, and sitting on two TPWD interview boards. I have participated in a wide range of activities through my ten weeks at the park, and it's always exciting because each day was different than the last. If you are looking for excitement and want to avoid any type of complacency or monotony, this would be a great internship for you.
